Having made a social-geographic map “The other Priorat” in 2009, whose aim was to reflect that part of Priorat that is excluded from the discourses and institutional tourism, this year, to continue the project, we have proposed a false tourist visit on typical topics of the region, those of which we try to escape … “oil + wine +  landscape = future.”

Project

As we saw last year, tourism in the region is centered on tours and activities with the reference axes wine, oil and landscape, so tourists have experiences with wine, oil and landscape quality. Certainly, oil + wine + landscape = future. In this way, in Priorat, is being formed a kind of Authentic Thematic Park, which is considered authentic in both directions, as well as native-worthy of Priorat. Around this concept of creating an Authentic Thematic Park, about what we wanted to further work from last year, but as a second layer of information, which can only be read if it uses the first, topics mentioned. For example, to go to Porrera from Reus must go through the Coll de la Teixeta, from which you can see the environmental and landscape around large windmills in the area. This dichotomy between atificial stage / natural landscape summarizes our intention making the current project, an informative brochure from a travel agency that offers a tour in Priorat to (re-) learn the topics in the area.

Objectives

1. Identify nodes (areas and places) of interest.
2. Questioning the “quality tourism”.
3. Systematize this information and generate documentation.

Metodology

We start from the idea of ​​continuity with “the other Priorat”, but this time based on the concept that we drew more attention: the authentic thematic park. For this reason we started to investigate aesthetic thematic parks, safaris, attractions, trails, zoos … Based on its aesthetics we created a travel agency (http://visitaturistica.es) based on the idea behind the project “Captain Obvious” (http://tinyurl.com/6aoz4e), where the typical is the most relevant topic. This travel agency will conduct a fake tour of the Priorat announced in a leaflet monograph to be deposited in Priorat Tourism Office (Wine Museum), is shared between pedestrians of Falset and some travel agencies in Barcelona (El Corte Inglés, Halcon Viajes, for example …) and specialized libraries (ex, Altair) through the technique of “putting” (the opposite of stealing, deposit items in, simulating commercial establishments that are part of them).

On April 23, 2011 the presentation was made in Priorat capital town, Falset (samples), where an information table set up where actors were selling the benefits of distributing such Priorat Tourist Route triptychs, stickers and promotional t-shirts with a taste of vinegar. The end result of the “Sightseeing in the Priorat” is composed of audiovisual material generated:

Summary of Information Day

On the morning of April 23 of this year, Sant Jordi´s date, in Holy Week, we set an information point in Falset, capital of Priorat, to make the formal presentation and inform pedestrians about the new travel agency and its new route: Sightseeing Priorat. For this presentation we have 2 hostesses who were informed of the qualities of the new tourist route through the region with information leaflets giving a taste of vinegar (the cheapest in the supermarket) and gift stickers and shirts. Were given about 400 leaflets, 50 T-shirts and 100 stickers. [See post to watch Flash video]

Openwalls Conference (OWC) is an international meeting that adresses public space artistic interventions, from two main strands: a seminar and a bunch of murals in Barcelona’s public space.

OWC will take place in october 20 to 22 in diferent locations of Barcelona, Spain Barcelona (CCCB, Espai Jove La Fontana and Espai Jove Bocanord) among some walls in different areas of town.

OWC is born from Difusor experiences in public space artistic interventions management, and aims to put light as much as to connect similar experiences, both from Barcelona and other cities with comparable public space policies.

Those objectives will be embodied in an international seminar showcasing ongoing and past projects, and lectures on muralism, artists, education and many more that would give a comprehension look to the phenomena.

A second objective is to start working towards a frame document that synthetises all the strength of projects and arguments presented. This document, created in a workshop during the OWC, wants to be a guideline to help independent project developer and public instances.

In order to strengthen OWC grassroots spirit, artistic interventions will be spread in walls all over the city, showing close how this kind of projects can help cities being more open, more creative and more inclusive.

Openwalls.org project launching!

This project embodies a model to manage public space non comissioned painting. It continues and expands an already existing project that allows to paint in the public space (Open Gallery), and contributes positively to social, cultural and artistic life in the areas where it developes its activity.

Objective

Openwalls.org aims to set up a network of walls where to paint with a legal authorisation.

How does it work?

1. You can donwload, freely and inmediately, authorisations to paint each of the walls, from the project’s website.

2. When getting the authorisation, you can choose date and location.

3. Authorisation is valid, both in paper or digital format, for two consecutive days, including the selected date.

4. If the user sends us a picture of the mural, the system will show it in the website.

Authorisation is generated in PDF format. It shows the name, surname of the user, and the date of the intervention.

At the same time, the system also sends a message to the authority hosting the project and to the local police as well. This message shows no personal information. It’s only a notification about an intervention taking place on the specified date.

Apart from painting, you can join the project trying to open more walls. In Barcelona or any other city, we can try to help. Contact us for that. The more the better!

Now, what about having a look at openwalls.org or choosing a day to paint?

This project is part of Última 09, in which we proposed to create a mural result of a research process with the territory (Priorat region, in the Tarragona province. This post shows the result of that process.

Working process

The Priorat is one of the least populated regions of Catalonia. However, a living area around three main themes: wine, landscape and the energy sector , with a strong role of local social movements in the struggle. The Platform brings together the efforts around environment, works to protect the heritage landscape, ecological and cultural. One of the initiatives promoted is to ask the county for the status of Cultural Heritage of Humanity, to protect their ways of life rooted historically.

So, we asked ourselves two questions:

• Is the Priorat region building a Theme Park of the Authentic?
• What’s the other side of the coin?

So what we intend to investigate further, we intend to reflect on aspects that complement this release explained, only a part of the Priorat.

The methodologies of the work process were the following:

• Meetings arranged with key informants.
• E-mail surveys
• Socio-geographical detorunements
• Query secondary sources of information
• Preparation of draft maps

The survey was conducted during October 2009 via email asking 85 people five questions related to the region.

Socio-geographical détorunements

The socio-geographical détorunements are another important part of the investigation, as they conducted us to produce much of the artwork and enabled setting a concept map to summarize basic information.

The détorunements is a technique of psychogeography, pseudo-science created by the Situationists in the late 50 that seeks to cross-examine the city. According to Debord’s words,

“The détorunmenent is presented as an uninterrupted passage through various environments. The concept of the détorunement is inextricably linked to the recognition of effects of psychogeographical nature, and the affirmation of a playful-constructive behavior, which opposes all aspects of the classic notions of journey and walk”
(Theory of the détorunement, Guy Debord, 1958). (The translation is ours).

We used the neologism “socio-geographical” to denote that our procedures have not been led by emotions and feelings of the researcher, but the emotions and feelings shared by a significant portion of Priorat, factors to which necessarily we add random and our decisions. The result, therefore, put on the table the shared significance of various aspects of the territory.

First détorunement

Highlight the contact that we could have with people involved in social and cultural movements in the area, which allowed us to refine the view to everything related to landscape impacts: the windmills of Coll de la Teixeta, water tanks in La Figuera, or mismanagement of cultural heritage. We were also able to grasp the massive presence of everything related to the wine cellars, vineyards, tours… and be aware of the existence of the wash houses on the outskirts of villages and the Flors de Maig as a culturally active nodes.

We went deeper into the issues that had been raised before: we visited the abandoned house of the Mines of Bellmunt, where they could have the set up the Priorat Centre d’Art headquarters, we made a special track to deposits, as impacts to the landscape but also as places where people could enjoy the abundant water (swimming, …). On this second visit appeared some recurring issues such as the very few outdoor paintings and abundance of walls, besides the traffic light of Falset, the only of the district and that, moreover, we saw that only is used in amber. Finally, we came out throug Coll d’Alforja, a privileged place to observe the Montsant mountains, but as a counterpoint, suffers a huge quarry hole.

At this point, we had the results of surveys and other documentation, such as the Carta del Paisatge del Priorat, from where we wanted to use the “points of observation and enjoying the landscape.” We went to see spots we had not yet visited among those highlighted as significant. For example, Siurana because of its spectacular scenery, but also for being the only place where we saw foreigners. Also, apart from the “contained nature” of Fraguerau, we made a discovery that condenses the current tensions in the Priorat: a skeleton of what should be a hotel contemplating a majestic landscape. We also made a sketch of some features of the character of the area, including the fact that the “try not to make vinegar.”

The following outline is a mental map concept that brings together several photos taken during the investigation, grouped by topic into categories. These categories include, for example, what we saw as character traits, or more landscape related topics.

The results of these surveys and of our own investigations imposed us the map, and not the painting a wall, the final format as most suitable for the project.

The first map is done based on feedback from our surveys and observations. The map is more abstract since, it has no legend, is a simple relationship of colors and sizes situated geographically over a backround that surrounds any particular territory.

The second map is less artistic because it has a much clearer role, since it incorporates a legend. It incorporates information from the Catalog of Landscape (observation and enjoyment points).

The third map wants to keep its information soul but also gather informative pie graphics, where size and color of its portions complements quantitative information.

The fourth map abandons the more statistical aesthetic to approach geography. Here, the darker areas denote the greatest significance. These areas may well be objectivated territorial fragments (such as Montsant mountains) or others, as ” view from the Coll d’alforja the Montsant mountains” that have emerged repeatedly in the polls.

In this map we incorporate the information that we were not able to reflect on the others. Through signs and, above all, we believe, the examples showed in the right column, plus the results of the survey, we tried to give a global idea of our work: a map, or a guide that serves as a guidelook beyond wine. Obviously not a list of all spots and issues that have emerged. There are many impacts on landscape or topics that may be relevant that we didn’t find. But however, these deficiencies are also important. Why’s not there what is not there?

We wanted to make a map of what is not good to show, what is not tourist related, and a counterpoint to what is politically innocuous.

It’s composed of 34 2x4m frames yet used during the Difusor2007 festival. Those frames, probably built for advertising a while ago, are incorporated in the main wall, giving the unique impression of visiting an open air gallery.

The Open Gallery has few guidelines which respond to the will of understanding between the project and the territory that embraces it.

The project proposes a way of facing urban art regulation also followed in other european cities. It was inaugurated on July 5th, 2008, with a collective show painted live, with artists and teens involved in cultural organisations.

Difusor is regularly updating the project’s website, as well as placing there events such as the 6th month celebration of the project.

The project is open for everyone.
